Your adventure begins as you arrive at Kigali International Airport, where a friendly representative will greet you. Following breakfast, you’ll embark on a city tour, starting with the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a deeply moving site dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Your much-anticipated gorilla trekking experience begins early in the morning. After breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette and safety. You will then set off on a guided trek into the forest, accompanied by rangers, in search of one of the habituated gorilla families.
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is an extraordinary experience—ranging from a brief 30-minute walk to a more challenging 4-hour hike depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend an hour observing them as they go about their day—feeding, resting, and interacting with each other. It’s a rare and privileged opportunity to connect with these magnificent creatures. After the trek, return to the lodge to relax and enjoy lunch. Yes, gorilla trekking can be physically demanding as it involves hiking through dense forests and steep terrain. However, the treks vary in difficulty, and the rangers will match you with a group based on your fitness level. It’s important to be prepared for some physical exertion.
A gorilla trek typically lasts between 1 and 4 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. The trek may take longer if the gorillas are farther away, but the reward of encountering them in their natural habitat is worth the effort.
It is recommended to bring comfortable hiking boots, long pants, a rain jacket, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You should also carry water and a camera (without a flash) to capture your memories.
While the chances of encountering gorillas are high, it’s not guaranteed. If you are unable to see the gorillas after a full day of trekking, a second permit may be issued at no extra cost for a future trek, subject to availability.
It is recommended to book your gorilla trekking permits at least 3 to 6 months in advance, especially during peak seasons, as permits are limited and can sell out quickly.
